Welcome to Mrs. Newberry’s Eighth Grade English/Language Arts!
As we focus on reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary, here are some highlights of the course.
We will read the following novels and plays:
-The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton (All Classes) -Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens (8i Only) -The Diary of Anne Frank (play), by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett (8h/m Only) -Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl(8i Only) -A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry (All Classes) -To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee (8i Only) -Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare (All Classes)
We will use the following literary anthologies for study of multiple genres, including short stories, poetry, and plays, as well as literary elements, such as theme, tone, and figurative language, among others:
-McDougal Littell – Literature -Glencoe – Literature – Reading with Purpose – Course 2
We will use Voyages in English and Exercises in English – Level H for grammar study, and Vocabulary Workshop – Level C for vocabulary study.
In the spring, students will be required to write a research paper using MLA format. Discipline Policy Students should abide by the following class rules: 1. Come to class prepared to learn and participate. 2. Never give up. 3. Remember each other’s human dignity. 4. Raise your hand to speak. 5. Listen and follow directions. 6. Always do your best. 7. Follow the IHM Student Handbook. 8. Forgive your own and others’ mistakes.
Should a student receive multiple warnings and not respond to interventions (e.g., a seating change), parents will be contacted. If an infraction is severe (e.g., physically aggressive behavior), parents will be contacted, and an incident report will be made to the PBIS coordinator.
Late Work Policy For each day an assignment is late, 20 percent will be subtracted from the assignment’s score. After five days, the assignment will not be accepted and will receive a zero in the gradebook.
